The Best Tools To Make Sense of a Busy Twitter Feed

Twitter is wonderful, but sometimes the sheer volume of information gets overwhelming. Lists are a good way to get around this problem, but they require a lot of time to curate. Fortunately, there are a great number of third-party apps that can help organize your feed into something simple and fun. Here are some of my favorites:

1) Flipboard

One of my favorite iPhone apps. Flipboard takes your tweets and turns them into a stunning, personalized magazine. You can also connect Facebook, Linkedin, Instagram, Tumblr, Flickr and Google Reader, so you can get a snapshot of the best of all your social media feeds. It groups your social feed into different categories, and lets you augment them with popular sites and blogs, all inside the Flipboard app. The best part is you can retweet, favorite, and reply from right inside the app. It even has an option for the classic-style RT, which is a nice touch. All in all,  it’s one of the best tools to organize and digest multiple, complex social feeds. If you have an iPhone, getting this app is a no-brainer.

2) Strawberryj.am

Another tool to find great content from your Twitter feed. Strawberryj.am analyzes your timeline and finds the most shared tweets. You can also search by keyword, or look for the most shared tweets in specific Twitter lists, one of my favorite features. Best of all, BufferApp is built into the interface, so skimming your feed for interesting stories to tweet over the day is easy. Strawberryj.am is currently in beta, but it is definitely worth signing up for the waiting list.

3) Twylah

Unlike the other previously mentioned tools, Tywlah helps make sense of your own tweets. Twylah finds your most used keywords and groups all your twitter correspondence into categories. The most popular piece of media in a category is shown at the top, and you can choose which categories to feature on your page. You can also send what are called “power tweets” from your page, which sends anyone who clicked on your link to a personalized landing page with other keyword-related tweets. From my talks with some of the devs, they’re also working on making a Facebook tab, which will be great for stylishly showcasing your twitter activity to the facebook community. Twylah is also in beta, and it sounds like they are planning on adding even more features to this already great tool, so keep an eye on this one.

If you have any tools you like to use to help organize your Twitter feed, I’d love to hear about them. Post a comment or send a tweet my way. I’m always excited to find new tools that help enhance the Twitter experience.
